Landlord jailed for 30 months after flat fire 08/05/2010

Michael Billings, of Beccles, Suffolk, was jailed for 30 months after Norwich Crown Court heard how barmaid Layla Skalli was given a less than 1% chance of survival following the blaze at her home in Norwich in April 2009, said the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).   more info

Landlords pay £16,000 for breach of prohibition notice 22/02/2010

Ralph Ricardo and Alistair Gordon of Sarum Homes Ltd pleaded guilty to the breach of the notice served under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 at Yeovil Magistrates Court, and asked for a similar offence to be taken into consideration on another property. They were sentenced at Taunton Crown Court on 12 February.   more info

Landlord of ‘deathtrap’ in Hereford loses court fines appeal 12/02/2010

A Hereford landlord could be forced to sell one of his homes after letting students sleep in a "deathtrap". Marc Mohan, of Church Way, Holmer, failed to provide the most basic fire safety precautions at his Aylestone Hill property. Mohan, aged 47, was ordered to pay more than £30,000 in March 2009 after admitting breaking fire and safety regulations. more info
